Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is committed to supporting environmentally friendly policies, including using and serving sustainable seafood and produce whenever possible. Our company adheres to the Monterey Aquarium Seafood Watch Program. What that means for our customers is they can always trust that the seafood they order in our restaurant has been fished or farmed in ways that have less impact on the environment. In recognition of our efforts to purchase and/or serve local products, we are a perennial San Mateo County As Fresh As It Gets Platinum Award Winner.

Beyond helping our diners make sustainable and locally sourced food choices, Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is committed to the environment in a multitude of ways. Our company was the first green-certified business on the San Mateo Coast, and we teamed up with the County of San Mateo, PG&E, the Bay Area Green Business Program and the Coastside County Water District to implement low energy and water usage processes. For example, we were the first brewery in California to brew a beer made from recycled water.

We were also the first restaurant on the San Mateo Coast to be named a Surfrider Foundation Ocean Friendly Restaurant. As a Surfrider Foundation Ocean Friendly Restaurant, we do not use any Styrofoam containers. Instead, all to-go containers, utensils and bags, as well as all of the paper products used in our restaurant, are made from recycled materials and are compostable. We also use proper recycling practices, reusable tableware for onsite dining, and offer disposable utensils for takeout food only upon request. We don’t offer plastic bags for takeout or to-go orders and we have gone to 100% paper straws, used only at customer request.

Other sustainable practices we are proud follow:

  • When we are cleaning, we are sure to use mild green cleaning agents, so that no harsh chemicals leak into the surrounding habitat.

  • We recycle our used cooking oil by donating to a local gardener for use in his diesel trucks.

  • We recycle spent beer grains by donating to a local pig farmer to use as feed.

  • Our landscaping is drought-resistant.

  • Our benches were built by a local company that only sources teak from a renewable farm.

  • We use low wattage, energy efficient bulbs and dimmer switches throughout the restaurant and low-flow water restrictors on spigots throughout the property.

  • We offer drinking water by request only.
